This week I participated in a upcycle challenge where I made a large freestanding message board out of vintage barn metal and salvaged wood. I wanted some cute little magnets to hold my memos and notes…something striking and old like the materials used in the memo board project. I had seen these beautiful magnets created from vintage jewelry in a little antique shop in Tennessee not too long ago and decided to make some for my memo board.
Having a consignment store and handling estates means we constantly come upon parts and pieces great treasures, like one gorgeous vintage earring that is missing it’s mate. I cannot throw these beauties away. I have a box of mismatched jewelry items just waiting for a purpose. And for this project, I pulled out that box!
Supplies for Vintage Jewelry Magnets
- one 2.0 oz tube of E-6000 industrial strength adhesive
- one pack of round magnets with adhesive attached
- miscellaneous mis-matched vintage earrings, brooches, pins and pendants
Instructions
Some of the vintage jewelry pieces had flat backs already so for these all I did was peel off the paper backing on the magnet and attach the sticky side to the earring or jewelry piece.
Some of the vintage earrings were clip-ons. For these I removed the hinged part with a pair of pliers. Simply grasp the hinged firmly with the pliers and bend the hinge back and forth until it snaps off. Once the hinge is removed, attach the adhesive side of the magnet to the earring.
Some of the vintage pieces had pin backs. I either removed the pin assembly or left it intact and added a glob of E-6000. I set the magnet on the glob an allowed it to dry.
And VOILA! How’s that for an easy project?
