Hi! I am Sue…Suzanne, Sue at Blu. I am a wife to my devoted husband of 31 years, a mother to five incredibly unique and passionate children, a Mom Mom to Gbaby Blu who just turned 5 and a forever Hallahan girl! I want to do it all, see it all, and try everything!
An only child, born in Philadelphia, I carry my childhood family traditions and working class roots with me. My parents instilled in me a love of country, community, family and faith. A resident of the Birmingham Alabama areas for 20+ years, I truly have a Yankee heart and a Southern soul.
I am an avid DIY’er, antique purveyor and lover of all things vintage. My passion is taking simple items whether worn or new, and transforming them into special items for my home. I love to share my knowledge and ideas with the hopes that you find some inspiration for your own home or for your life. I have an attachment to things and I love to display items that elicit great memories of great people and fun times.
I love to travel! Whether it’s Europe, another state here in the US, or simply to a local antique or decor shop, I invite you to follow along. Join me in sharing your tips and finds as well.
I am in the process of updating our home and making it our personal and custom haven. I’m not really sure I can corral my style into one genre but my favorites are traditional American, French Country, Hollywood Regency, Provincial. So basically eclectic! I’m a Philly born creative spirit with strong roots in tradition and a flair for the extravagant. I love to try new things and I must see it all!
Below is my previous “About Me” from when I owned my store. I am hesitant to delete this because it really tells a story. So enjoy! Note: I closed The Blue Building in 2019.
You can find me on any given day at my store, The Blue Building Antiques and Consignment. My Dad instilled the love for DIY in me at a very young age. We didn’t have repairmen come to our house. My Dad (aka POP, that’s him below) did everything…the roofing, plumbing, electrical, masonry tasks, refinishing, drywall, painting, tiling…if it needed done, Pop did it! And if I ever saw a cool toy on TV that we couldn’t afford (or he didn’t want to buy), he made me one!
Welcome to our Shop at Blu pages. I started this blog to drive traffic to my antique and consignment store in Alabaster AL. In the process, a never ending process, I have met some phenomenal folks at my store, in the blog world, on Facebook, at conferences, and simply on the street. In these pages are observations, DIY tips, and sometimes just an introduction to a cool product or a sweet person that we have encountered. Come along for the ride…check in from time to time…laugh with us and enjoy the Elegant Clutter that makes up LIFE!
The Blue Building Antiques and Consignment, located in Alabaster AL, opened on August 1, 2009. We have 25 dealers and over 300 people who consign with us on a regular basis. At the shop, you will find exquisite antiques, rare collectibles, items for you to restore, vintage decor, eclectic beauties, and a colorful display of individual personalities–most notably my Dad, aka Pop (and yes, that is a Lucy’s Locket that he is sporting)! We have great taste here at Blu!

Hi sue, you came to my house a couple of weeks ago and bought something. I live in weatherly in the ledges. You said u might want to buy other things I had in my garage. R u still interested? Thanks, Carol aldridge
Yes Carol! Will call you! Thanks for the follow up!
do you guys buy porcelain dolls?
We do not buy dolls. They move very slowly. We do occasionally take select dolls on consignment.
Hi Sue, I dialed your Blue Building phone number today, but it did not work. Has your number changed? Thanks! Donna
We are having a problem with the main line. It only works when the power is on/store is open. Waiting on the electrician! A gentleman stopped by the other day and inquired to your account. I told him I will be running reports today. I will give you a call once I have some totals. Sorry for the delay!
I’m officially entering for the spray painter and if I were to win, I would paint the two front porch rockers that are peeling away coating everyone in white. I would also paint a room and Stephen’s night stand. 🙂
And if you don’t win. I will come paint them for you! Haha!
We have some nice quality outdoor furniture to consign. Might I send you pictures ?
Sandy
Absolutely! We would love to sell it for you.
Folks are already out looking to spruce up their outdoor spaces!
Sue, you have started a fire for antiques within my soul. Walking around blu. The other day there was so many things I was just imagining in our new home.
Can’t wait to buy more “happy things” as my boyfriend calls them. Thank you for helping me find a new obsession.
You sweetie! Thanks so much and hope to see you soon!
Hi, Carol, my name is Connie Whitworth & I live in Wixford Moor in Weatherly. My neighbor, Mary Stout recommended your store to me a long time ago. I am in the process of moving and have a few pieces that I would like to sell. I will be happy to send or bring by pictures. Please let me know what would be most convenient for you.
Haha…that’s ok! I’ve moved our family 9 times so I understand! If you would email pictures to thebluebuilding@charter.net I can take a look and help you out. We prefer to consign because you will get alot more. When we buy outright we just pay yard sale prices. Talk to you soon!
Sue, my deepest apologies for calling you Carol. I had just hung up talking to someone else with that name, and the packing stage after 23 years in this house has me a “little” frazzled.
I have a wood slab coffee table with claw feet . Do you guys sale items like this?
Yes Ma’am we sure do! Sorry for the delay. Not sure why this didn’t pop up sooner! Send us a picture.
Do you still have it? That’s probably something I could sell online or at a show for you.
Hello Sue,
This is (Benita) your longtime customer in Alabaster. Did you sell the upside-down tree you had at the Blue Building?
Nope! I couldn’t let go of that!
What is your stores address?
We closed the retail store in 2019. I’m trying to get back to doing shows and I am also working on an online store.
